WHAT IS 1BASE VALHALLA?

1BASE Valhalla is a totally integrated decision support and information processing concept provided via a complete turnkey solution, including hardware, software, services, customized end-user ready applications, upgrades (inc. whatever changes are needed) and support. In short, 1BASE Valhalla provides all the classical MIS-related functions, but with a fixed pricing structure to ensure predictable costs and performance. Implementing 1BASE Valhalla releases companies from the day-to-day MIS-related functions involved in running a computerized organization and frees management to focus on the business itself.

THE COMPONENTS OF 1BASE VALHALLA

1BASE SOFTWARE

1BASE software is constructed to consistently adapt to changes in your company and environment. The data base engine, the user-ready applications, and the data base structures are all designed to work interactively with the user. Any authorized user can access any up-to-date information from any part of the system, at any time.

The key components of 1BASE are its speed, flexibility, security, and integration - facets which are achieved by considering the design and structure of 1BASE as a whole. The enclosed Matrix shows how the features of 1BASE react with each other to provide these components.

The key factor when considering speed and efficiency is the number of times your data base program needs to interact with the stored data in order to perform its functions. The fewer times your data base has to interact with the hard drive to get your information, the faster and more efficient your system is. 1BASE is optimized to reduce this traveling to a minimum. This synergy - achieved through the combination of several features - enables 1BASE not only to offer speed and efficiency, but flexibility, security and integration of information.

These features include:

Instant data access via the Primary Index System:

The primary index system incorporates an optimized mathematical access algorithm with one way pointers only. This is the fastest way to access information. The data address - i.e. where the information resides - is found within 1.01 reads to the hard drive. This speed cannot be improved and does not degrade no matter how big your data base grows.

Decision and user support via the Secondary Index System:

A variation of the primary index system, it is optimized for fast index maintenance. Between 25-200 fields per record can be maintained without significantly affecting performance levels.

Report generation and user requested search functions are achieved using the combined speed and flexibility of the primary and secondary indexing systems. In fact, the more you narrow down search criteria, the faster the report becomes.

The Universal Data Storage Design Logic:

The 1BASE field - or building block - is treated as one, abstract data type, and accepts any number, short or long, and any set of data represented as ASCII information. An empty field does not take up space.

Records are constructed by any combination of different 1BASE fields. A 1BASE record contains records-within-records, reflecting Nature`s tree structure - e.g. molecules, invoices, Bill of Materials. Storing records-within-records means that all data that belongs together is stored in context. Because the 1BASE self-describing, variable length fields can expand and contract as needed, records can be as large or small as necessary, within limitations.

All application programming is done once and for all time for individual and group fields, which can then be combined in any way into an application program. This simple structure forms a solid foundation to achieve total integration of information within any organization, no matter how complex.

New information fields can be easily added to any application on-the-fly and are instantly user ready, and able to work with existing, stored information.

The Data Base Program:

Governed by data context, the 1BASE record, constructed by the natural building block, underpins the data base program itself. The data base is designed to be universal, compact, and shared. It always resides in memory and requires just 250KB, plus only a further 250KB of memory per user.

1BASE - Beating the software crisis:

Companies are still struggling in a software crisis that does not deliver precise information on demand (Scientific American, Sep 1994). However, the constant flow of information does not stop. Companies are over-supplied with data and information, yet decision makers still cannot get what they need at the point of action, when precise, instantly available facts could make a real difference.

1BASE delivers efficient storage of data, available whenever needed for administration and decision support. In fact, 1BASE is designed and developed so you can tap the benefits of your data, instantly, supplying whatever facts are needed to help you decide and stay in control.

1BASE is designed to avoid the common pitfalls that can lead to slow, error-prone systems.
These problems include:

  • Joining of tables
  • Splitting records in a non-natural way, violating Nature`s structures
  • Pointer chaining
  • Mixing incompatible data types, which can lead to widespread data corruption when errors occur

1BASE does not join tables together, nor does it split its records in a non-natural way. For example, with 1BASE, an Invoice, Part List, Bill of Materials, or Customer Profile can be stored in one record, instead of fragmenting the line item information into many records, as with traditional data bases. A typical Invoice can have between three and ten lines; a Bill of Materials between ten and fifty lines. Each line could represent a separate trip to the disk or CPU. However, because of its data file structure, 1BASE can access this same information with just one trip, making access to data - in these examples - three to fifty times faster than traditional systems.

1BASE assigns a unique access code to each record and makes it accessible via a single, one-way address pointer which, even if damaged, can be easily repaired on line.

Utilizing one-way pointers and self-describing fields means that data cannot be damaged and data cannot be lost.

In addition, each 1BASE record contains only the type of fields needed for that record; no blank or partially empty fields or records are allowed to waste disk storage. In fact, 1BASE occupies far less space than competitive data bases, making it possible to keep ten to twenty years of transactions on line, while everything is indexed for fast response.

1BASE Valhalla is a complete, totally integrated turnkey solution. A single node, 90Mhz Pentium PC can support 50-300 users, process in excess of two million transactions, and handle ten million indexed fields. Bigger and faster machines can support a larger number of users. Data is made available around the clock, and the service itself includes hardware and software, cabling, terminals, customized end-user applications, training, full MIS support, consultancy, turnkey installations, built to match your needs at a fixed price.

You will benefit from:

  • True, integrated multi-user operation
  • Object-oriented solutions
  • Complete on-line operating procedures
  • Full integration and account updates of all transactions in real-time
  • Historical analysis and future projections at a keystroke
  • Built-in e-mail with automatic notifications and record notes integrated with transactions
